Transboundary Fisheries Management: Regional technical workshop on transboundary fisheries management and fish biodiversity conservation issues in the Prespa Lakes Basin
In order to initiate the integration of the fisheries sector into basin management planning and implementation, the UNDP GEF Transboundary Prespa Project is conducting a situational analysis of fisheries in the basin which will ultimately lead to development of systematic, integrated and participatory process with clear milestones which will ensure that transboundary cooperation in dealing with fisheries management issues will be established, with the focus on fish conservation and wise use including ecosystem-oriented fisheries management.
As part of this process on 4-5 May 2009, the project hosted a Regional technical workshop on transboundary fisheries management and fish biodiversity conservation issues in the Prespa Lakes Basin. The aim of this meeting was to bring together key stakeholders to identify, compile and provide relevant information on basin fish and fisheries and contribute methodologically and technically to the formulation of a process for transboundary cooperation in fisheries management and development. This Regional Technical Workshop took place in Struga, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
Around 40 participants from the community-level fisheries stakeholders and members and/or representatives of fishermen organizations, NGOs dealing with fish and fisheries, national fish and fisheries experts, representatives from the national fisheries management authorities etc. attended this workshop.
